Struggles and overcomings ✫

It is only expected for struggles to arise when working on a project that is passion-driven and an extended time limit, as well the creative aspects of creating your own work also played factors into the stress I faced, here are some:

  • A story to tell: It would not be hard to believe that a complication would be finding a story to tell, no matter what I tried I believed that every story that there was to be told that was already relayed. I wanted to write a story that differed from any other, a unique tale. However, setting these expectations for myself was only a cause of insecurity for my work, as I found myself dissatisfied when I compared it to other works, now, however, I understand that this stands as a work of its own. What has been done or will be done will not affect the quality or the work and passion I poured into telling this story

  •  Finding writing style and oneself: As mentioned above I struggled with finding myself in my writing, I truly felt my work was only a reproduction of other literature I enjoyed ,and found myself using techniques inspired by some of my favorite authors. That is not something I should be ashamed of however as originality is not dictated by creating a new manner but a new vision, and through this road to finding myself through my work, my writing style materialized and left its own marks.

  • POV: Choosing the POV for your story is an exhausting task because it is only you who knows the point of view your narrative will take and it genuinely changes everything. It is simply the lense that the viewer peers through, and changing that lense can alter the entire mood or rhythm of your tale. I overcame this challenge by experimenting with many different POVs for my story and I often used the rules associated with using certain perspectives to tell this story.

  • Artist block: Every creative suffers art block at given periods of their content output. However, the reasons and length vary, I suffered a  creative block throughout the period of January to March where my idea output was close to none and I ended up scrapping many of the writing that was done around that period. To make my way through that I focused my energy on investigating what creates a good book and working on my techniques.

  • Making this my own: I mentioned above the ongoing tension between myself and my work and how a major part of the difficulty I faced was self-inflicted, as I hardly believed this was a piece that could stand on its own legs. This is a piece that can stand on its own two legs, and no one should ever believe their work is inferior by scaling themselves on a standard created to measure others. This is a work I'm proud of and it stands with my name.
